On September 4th, 2017 at around 8:31pm, the DCSO investigated a personal injury accident involving a motorcycle.  The accident occurred 2300 block of Highway 71 south of Milford.

There were three vehicles involved in the accident.  The first vehicle was a 2015 Chevrolet Impala driven by Kenneth Mathews (46) of Terril.  The second vehicle is unknown.  The third vehicle was a 2009 Harley Davidson FXDB driven by Christopher Swanson (50) of Spirit Lake.  All the vehicles were northbound in a single line.

Mathews slowed down to avoid hitting an animal in the roadway.  The unknown vehicle that was behind Mathews changed lanes.  As the vehicle was changing lanes, it clipped the driver’s side rear bumper causing minor damage.  Swanson also was changing lanes when the unknown vehicle changed lanes in front of him.  Swanson then used his brakes and swerved back into the right lane to avoid hitting the unknown vehicle.  As Swanson returned to the right lane, he rear-ended Mathews.  This caused Swanson and his passenger, Lori Swanson (48), to be ejected from the motorcycle onto the trunk of Mathews vehicle and then landed on the roadway.

Both Christopher and Lori Swanson were suspected of sustaining serious or incapacitating injuries.  They were transported to the hospital by ambulance.  Helmets were not worn during the accident.  Damage to the motorcycle was estimated at $2,000.

Mathews did not report any injuries.  Damage to Mathews vehicle was estimated at $5,000.

The DCSO was assisted by the Milford Police Department, Milford Fire Department, Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance, and Jenning’s Tow & Repair.
